The Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa opened at 5 PM on Wednesday for the first time since the Supreme Court’s landmark verdict allowing women of all ages to enter the shrine.
The big question on everyone’s mind was – will women get to enter the shrine or not? The Supreme Court verdict to allow women to worship Lord Ayyappa at his temple had received praise from several women rights groups and rationalists but irked devotees in Kerala and beyond.
There have been widespread protests against it. The state government announced that it would help implement the Supreme Court verdict to allow women of all ages into the shrine. Security is tight near the temple and around 1,000 police personnel have been deployed.
Earlier in the day tension prevailed at the base camp, when police resorted to heavy lathicharge at Nilakkal as a group of protesting devotees turned violent and pelted stones at police personnel and other onlookers.
